| Q: What is the purpose of apresX? |
| A: apresX is intended to be an online community of people who enjoy online philosophical and political debate, news discussions, etc |
| Q: What are the rules? |
A: There are really no rules, but in order to keep my webhost from shutting the site down, please refrain from posting: - pornography
- links to viruses
| Q: So sex is O.K.? |
| A: Sex is always O.K. There is always a good excuse for sex. |
| Q: Speaking of which... Who is the hot green-eyed girl in the picture? |
| A: It's a secret. I won't tell. |
| Q: Were you really arrested for sodomy? |
| A: Well, the answer is: No. Not yet. |
| Q: What do I get if I sign up? |
A: You may be the winner of $10,000,000* and you will be granted the privilege of posting to the online discussions. You will be part of a growing community of (hopefully) smart individuals in search for a better half and... uhm... wrong site. Nevermind.
(*) Not really, unless you actively play the lottery. But it sure sounds nice doesn't it? |
| Q: What about privacy? |
A: When you register, you are allowed to set some basic privacy stuff. You can hide your email or your whole profile from other members and non-members if you so choose to.
Also, if your email should appear on your profile, apresX will automatically encode it in such a way that it will not be detectable by spam robots that fetch emails from webpages. Furthermore, your email, MSN, ICQ, Y!M, and AIM will be hidden from non-members and outsiders.
apresX will not give away emails to spammers and it will make the best efforts to protect the privacy of users. |
| Q: Are the discussions moderated? |
| A: Although there are moderators, you should not worry much about them. Hopefully, no posts will ever have to be deleted for breaking the "no rules" rules. However, flame wars tend to get old very quickly so a thread may be locked or deleted to stop one. Users may also be placed under restriction. |
| Q: Help! I forgot my password. How will I ever survive? |
A: You are as doomed as a gerbil... in Richard Gere's hands. The good news is that you can click here and be saved by the Gerbil Police.
If you did something silly -like setting a fake email after registering instead of setting your privacy correctly-, you may write an email to apresx AT apresx DOT com with [PWD] in the subject. |
| Q: So what\'s up with the forums? |
A: The forums are a more discreet way of showing off in the public domain of the internet.
- News Forum
- Updates Forum
- General Forum
- Debate Forum
- Events Forum
- Polls
You should note a big difference in what happens when you add a post to the News or Updates forum, though, as these will be published on the Front Page of apresX. The rest of the forums will keep their content within them. |
| Q: How do I post a new thread or article? |
A: Just click on the link next to "new" that says article or thread. You will need to select a type of article or forum.
Remember that articles will appear on the front page! |
| Q: What are Drafts? |
A: You can now write articles and save them for later. This will allow you to take your time in researching and writing them without the fear of losing all of your work.
As with any application, please save your work periodically.
When writing an article that you are not going to finish at the moment, make sure to check "Save as Draft" so that the article is not published until it's ready.
To view a list of your Drafts, click on "dafts" under the View menu. |
| Q: How do I use those BB Tags? |
A: When you're entering a comment, you can format how the text will show once it is posted.
For additional help on how to use each tag, just click on the "help (?)" link underneath the BB Tags or click here. |
| Q: How do I send private messages to other members? |
A: There are many ways to send a message to other users.
You can click on the little envelope near the member's name on the member list. You can click on New Message on the left-side menu. You can click on "Send Message" from the user's profile. You can also go to your Inbox and click on "Send A Message" link. Make sure to type the username(s) correctly. |
| Q: How do I edit my profile? |
A: Once you're logged in, just click on the view profile link, from the side menu. Then click on the "Edit Profile" link above your profile.
Piece of cake, huh? |
| Q: I have nowhere to host my avatar. Will apresX host it for me? |
A: Yes. Just email your avatar to apresx AT apresx DOT com.
In the subject line, put [AVATAR] and your username so we can match it to your profile.
The email should be sent from the account you entered in your profile. |
| Q: What does that |
A: Subscription is a feature that allows you to receive ONE email notification after the next person replies to a particular article or thread.
You will receive an email to let you know that the thread has one or more new comments.
To subscribe, simply click on the "Subscribe" link to the right of the thread's title.
If you are writing a new article or thread, you can choose to subscribe by checking the "Subscribe" box.
If you want to subscribe automatically to every article or thread that you create, you can turn On "Subscribe me to articles/threads that I start" by editing your Profile / Preferences. |
| Q: How do I unsubscribe from a thread? |
| A: Simply open the thread and click on the "Unsubscribe" link at the top near the thread's title. You can unsubscribe from multiple threads here. |
| Q: How does the site operate? |
| A: I tried to make it as automated as possible. There are still some administrative functions I have to perform, but hopefully, the site will run on its own without me having to jumpstart it like my girlfriend's car. |
| Q: I meant, how does it work? |
| A: Oh, it's a combination PHP, a MySQL database, cascading style sheets, HTML, JavaScript, and graphics. |
| Q: Does the website stick to any standards? |
A: Yes. I made a lot of effort to make the site 100% compliant with W3C standards for HTML 4.01. To check it out, visit apresX HTML , CSS, and RSS validation certificates.
To check your own site, visit The W3C HTML Validator and CSS Validator pages, or Mark Pilgrim's RSS Validator. |
| Q: Do you have a life outside of programming for apresX? |
| A: No. Wait, I think I have a job. Maybe? |
| Q: What do the Front Page news icons stand for? |
A: w: world news
b: business news
s & t: science and technology news
s: sports news
a & e: arts & entertainment news
r: rant update
i: interesting update
f: funny update
n: nothing update |
| Q: Do you have newsfeed-like service that I could put on my webpage or Trillian? |
| A: Yes. The newsfeed or RSS can be found on the file http://cgi.apresx.com/apresx.xml. |
| Q: Who do I report bugs to? |
| A: If you find a bug and are so nice that you want to report it, please write a short description of it with the page name (or URL) and email it to apresx AT apresx DOT com with "[BUGS]" somewhere in the subject. |
| Q: I have a question that's not answered here... |
| A: Well, you can just drop me a line at apresX AT apresx DOT com with "[FAQ]" somewhere in the subject and I will gladly answer it for you. I may even put your question here on the FAQs. Yay! |
